How to Take Care of New Sod

Thank you for choosing our company to install your SOD.

Please follow these instructions to allow your SOD to grow and establish properly. It takes about 1 year for your lawn to fully establish.

  1. Water your new SOD AT LEAST TWICE a day for 12 to 14 days straight. Water AT LEAST TWICE a day, soaking the grass, usually about 30 to 40minutes per zone TOTAL, NOT PER RUN TIME (or area if you don’t have sprinklers). The best time to water is between 5am and 8am.
  2. After 12 to 14 days, resume watering only about 2 days a week. Water about 2 to 3inches a week. You can purchase a rain gauge at HomeDepot.
  3. Avoid watering every day, this weakens the root system. (this refers to after the 12 days of soaking)
  4. You can mow the lawn after about 4 weeks. Mow the grass about 3 inches in height. Use a sharp blade on the mower. We recommend mowing the lawn at least twice a week for the first 6 months. This helps establish a thick turf.
  5. DO NOT walk on the SOD for at least 3 to 4 weeks.
  6. DO NOT add fertilizer or any other chemicals to sod for at least 6 weeks. Be sure to follow and read the instructions of any fertilizer you purchase, too much or the wrong kind can kill your grass. (UNLESS IT IS ORGANIC)
  7. DO NOT SOAK YOUR SOD for more than 14 days. Fungus may grow and kill your new lawn.
  8. Weeds may start to grow in some areas, be sure to remove them as soon as you can by hand. Put the weeds in a bag and dispose of. Do not shake the weeds over the lawn.
  9. Some SOD squares may turn brown. Be sure they are getting enough water. They should green up.
  10. Always look out for insect infestations, signs of fungus.
